Is that an H-pattern 4 speed on the column, but on the left? Whaa?

you must have missed a few posts a month or so back.

its a "pre-selector". you choose what gear you want, let off the gas, and the car changes gear for you...think of it as a h-pattern automatic.

used to be used in bentlys and rollers IIRC.

Cotal semi automatic, operated by electromagnets. The lever was usually on the left because almost to the end Delahaye made only rhd cars and once they made lhd models they just kept using the existing parts.

Yes, it operates four, and only four, gears. The forward/reverse lever can be seen coming up from the transmission tunnel and ending with a knob just behind the rim of the wheel. So, four gears in each direction, at least in principle.

Technically, no. It worked along the same lines as a pre selector in the sense that both are epicyclic and changed by applying brakes to various elements, but with the Cotal you use the clutch to start and then just flick the lever whereupon the gear change takes place. With a pre selector the selection and the gearchange are separated and carried out by lever (selection) and pedal (change).

The door panels look like they could be a relief sculpture from over the door of a 1930s post office or the wall of a train station.

Yes, some designers really liked their doors. Note the swan on this one:
